The New York Red Bulls trace their roots to the very first season of MLS, originally taking the field as the MetroStars before an energy-drink rebrand reshaped the club in 2006. Based across the river in New Jersey, the Red Bulls have built one of the league's stronger regular-season track records without ever quite closing out a title. Their attacking, high-press identity has made them a perennial playoff threat. The club's supporters carry a long, occasionally frustrating history with the team's near-misses.
Established in 1994 as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, the club was a charter member of MLS in its 1996 inaugural season and was rebranded the New York Red Bulls after Red Bull GmbH's 2006 purchase. The Red Bulls have reached the MLS Cup final twice, losing to Columbus Crew in 2008 and again in 2024, and remain without a league title. The club has instead built its trophy case around the regular season, winning Supporters' Shields in 2013, 2015, and 2018.
