Few clubs in American soccer carry the depth of tradition of the Portland Timbers, whose green-and-gold identity and iconic "Timbers Army" supporters' culture trace back to the 1970s. Portland's soccer roots predate MLS by decades, first taking the field in the old NASL before returning through lower divisions and eventually joining MLS in 2011. The club's atmosphere, anchored by the log-cutting chainsaw celebration, is widely regarded as one of the best in the league. Timbers matches remain a signature experience in American soccer.
The Timbers name dates to 1975, when the original club played in the NASL and reached that league's championship game, Soccer Bowl '75, before folding in 1982. A new Timbers side was revived in 2001 in the lower divisions and joined MLS in 2011. Portland won its first MLS Cup in 2015, defeating the Columbus Crew 2-1, and returned to the final in 2018 and 2021, losing both times, most recently on penalties to New York City FC.
