Sporting Kansas City traces back to MLS's very first charter class, evolving from the Kansas City Wiz and Wizards into the rebranded club known today. Kansas City has built a reputation for hard-working, high-pressing soccer and one of the league's more successful development pipelines. The club's Children's Mercy Park home has become known for a raucous, tightly packed atmosphere that ranks among MLS's toughest road environments. Sporting KC remains a steady contender in the Western Conference.
Founded in 1995 as one of MLS's ten charter clubs, the franchise began play in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz, was renamed the Kansas City Wizards in 1997, and rebranded as Sporting Kansas City in 2009. The club won its first MLS Cup in 2000, defeating the Chicago Fire 1-0, and its second in 2013 on penalties over Real Salt Lake. Kansas City has also won the U.S. Open Cup four times — 2004, 2012, 2015, and 2017 — and the 2000 Supporters' Shield.
