Established in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League, the Chargers reached the very first AFL championship game and, under coach Sid Gillman's innovative passing offense, won the AFL title in 1963 with a lopsided win over Boston. The team joined the NFL in the 1970 merger and reached its only Super Bowl following the 1994 season, falling to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX.
