The franchise began in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques before relocating to Denver in 1995 and becoming the Colorado Avalanche. The team won the Stanley Cup in its very first season in Colorado, 1996, and added a second title in 2001 behind Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, and Patrick Roy, along with a fierce rivalry with the Detroit Red Wings. After a rebuilding stretch, Colorado won a third championship in 2022, led by Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, reestablishing the franchise among the league's elite.
