The 1980 Winter Olympics and its weird format

While everybody remembers the Miracle on Ice, the format for said Tournament was weird. While we now have a bracket format, before that, we had sort of a "double group" format. Here's what it is. Basically, there were two groups with 6 teams. The top 2 from each group advanced to the final round (just wait) and the 3rd place teams would play each other for 5th place. Now, the final round. All 4 teams were placed into a group and played both teams from the other group, with the other team from their group's result during the group stage being carried over. This theoretically means that the US still could have pulled off the Miracle on Ice and NOT WON THE GOLD MEDAL. Basically, if the US lost or tied their last game, the USSR would have more wins than them, since the US tied Sweden in the group stage. Yeah, that's something
