Harper Cycles Into Rare Air

Bryce Harper hit his first career cycle in just five innings earlier tonight, becoming the ninth player in MLB history to accomplish a cycle that fast into a game. Eight other players have reached a cycle within the first five innings of a game. They are as follows: Harry Craft (CIN, 1940) Joe Gordon (NYY, 1940) Jim Ray Hart (SFG, 1970) Ivan De Jesus (CHC, 1980) Gregg Jefferies (PHI, 1995) Mike Lansing (COL, 2000)* Melvin Upton Jr. (TBR, 2009) Adrian Beltre (TEX, 2015) *Lansing is believed to have the fastest cycle in MLB history, accomplishing his in just four innings.

A Once in a Lifetime Game

The Phillies are the second team in MLB history to have a player hit for the cycle and a player hit 3 homers in the same game. The other was the Yankees on June 3, 1932. Tony Lazzeri hit for the cycle, and Lou Gehrig knocked 4 home runs. The Yankees outpaced the Philadelphia Athletics to win 20-13. Lazzeri’s cycle was achieved in the top of the 9th inning, and nearly came in order. He struck out in the top of the 2nd, but then singled, doubled, and tripled in his next three plate appearances. He singled again in the top of the 8th before homering to complete the cycle in the top of the 9th. The Yankees went on to win the 1932 World Series, so teams who achieve a game of this statistical anomaly currently have a 100% success rate in securing a title in the fall.

Schwarbombing Into Franchise History

Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs in the same inning tonight, making him the fourth player in Phillies history to do so. He’s also the 64th unique player to achieve this feat. The three other Phillies to hit two home runs in the same inning are Andy Seminick (1949), Von Hayes (1985) and Trea Turner (2023). Schwarber also launched both of his baseballs for a combined 913 feet, which I’m wondering if it’s possibly a record amongst the exclusive clubs mentioned earlier. EDIT: He’s the first player in the Statcast era with 900+ feet of home runs in the same inning. Previous high was Mark Trumbo in 2016 with 859 feet.

One Player, One Game, Two Teams

Danny Jansen was the first player in MLB history to play for both teams in the same game. After the April 26th, 2024 game between Toronto and Boston was suspended in the top of the second inning due to rain, they resumed play 4 months later on August 26th. Danny Jansen had been in a 0-1 count when the game was suspended, but having been traded to the Red Sox during the intervening months his at-bat had to be continued by Daulton Varsho in a pinch-hitting role with Jansen himself behind the plate. Danny Jansen would go to bat in the bottom of this same inning, went 1-4 on the day, and struck out to end the game.
