The NFL Adopts The 2-Point Conversion: Today in Sports History

On March 22nd, 1994, the NFL announced the addition of the 2-point conversion, the league’s first scoring change in 75 seasons. The American Football League (AFL) used the two-point conversion during its ten-season existence from 1960 to 1969. It finally returned to pro football 25 years after the NFL and AFL merged. Tom Tupa scored the first two-point conversion in NFL history, running in a fake extra point attempt for the Cleveland Browns in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals during the first week of the 1994 season. He scored three such conversions that season, earning the nickname "Two-Point Tupa".

Jerry Rice's "Official" Retirement

Today is the 20 Year Anniversary of Jerry Rice's Official Retirement. Although he Signed with the Broncos for 1 year in 2005 he chose to not play a single game for them and retire. On August 24th he Officially Retired from the Game of Football Signing a Ceremonial One-Day Contract with the 49ers so he could retire with the Franchise he Played best for. He played 303 Games, 1549 Receptions (1st), 22,895 Receiving Yards (1st), and 197 Receiving Touchdowns (1st).

A Newspaper Office, A Meat Company, And $500

There was no stadium. There was no league. There was a room. On August 11, 1919, a group of local athletes crowded into the editorial room of the Green Bay Press-Gazette - the paper's editor, George Calhoun, had been running ads telling anybody who wanted to play football to show up - and started a team. Curly Lambeau was 21. He'd been at Notre Dame under Knute Rockne, got knocked out of school by tonsillitis, come home, and taken a job at the Indian Packing Company. So he asked his employer for money. The company gave him $500 for jerseys and equipment and let the team practice on an open lot on company property three days a week. The condition: name the team after the sponsor. They were the Indians first. By the end of the year everybody was just calling them the Packers. That first season they went 10-1 and opened with a 53-0 win over the Menominee North End A.C. at Hagemeister Park, passing a hat through the crowd for gate money. The meatpacking company that paid for the jerseys was gone within a few years. The name it bought is still on the field in Green Bay, 107 years later, owned by the town.
