From 2010-2018, the defending World Cup champion missed the knockout rounds all three times. In 2010, defending champions Italy went out in the group stage with two 1-1 draws against Paraguay and New Zealand and a 3-2 loss to Slovakia finishing bottom of the group with two points (France, who they beat in the 2006 final also finished bottom of their group too with one point). Then in 2014, Spain crashed out of the group stage with a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands and a 2-0 loss to Chile before getting a meaningless 3-0 win against Australia to finish with 3 points. In 2018, Germany lost 1-0 to Mexico before bouncing back against Sweden, then got upset by South Korea 2-0 and finished bottom of the group with 3 points.
