How the Jets, Bill Belichick and the 49ers helped the Ravens get their GOAT
It’s easy to forget, but Bill Belichick was both coach and GM of the Cleveland Browns before they moved to Baltimore. Prior to that announcement, Bill and the Browns had the 10th pick in the NFL draft. The player Bill coveted? Kyle Brady. However, 1 pick before him, the New York Jets made one of the most infamous picks in NFL history. While Jets fans chanted “We want [Warren] Sapp!”, the Jets drafted Kyle Brady. When asked about the Brady pick on the draft broadcast, Bill said “if he would’ve been there, we would’ve taken him”. If you don’t believe that, remember Kyle Brady played on the 2007 Patriots. With his top choice gone, Belichick traded back with the 49ers and got a 1st round pick in the 1996 draft. 1 year later, Ozzie Newsome used that 49ers 1st that Bill acquired because he couldn’t get Kyle Brady to select a linebacker from Miami named Ray Lewis. Lewis would go down as an all-time great and a thorn in the side of Bill’s Patriots. If the Ravens don’t have that pick, Ray Lewis could’ve gone down as a 49ers legend or maybe, a Cowboys legend as they were the next team to select a linebacker. Safe to say I’m happy with how things worked out. TLDR: the Jets selecting Kyle Brady gave the Ravens Ray Lewis and set up Warren Sapp to go to the Buccaneers.
