“The Network Associates Coliseum! The Moneyball A's, already riding a 19 game wave of destiny, exploded for 11 runs by the third inning against the lowly Royals. Ray Durham tripled, Eric Chavez drove in three, John Mabry went deep. It felt like a coronation. Then the baseball gods laughed. Kansas City chipped away five in the fourth, five more in the eighth on Mike Sweeney's three-run shot and tied it in the ninth off Billy Koch. An 11-0 lead evaporated into pure chaos. 55,528 souls held their breath. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Art Howe summoned Scott Hatteberg, the patient on base machine Beane had plucked from obscurity and shifted to first. Pinch hitting for Eric Byrnes, Hatteberg turned on Jason Grimsley's sinker and launched it into the right-center bleachers. Walk-off. 12-11. American League record 20 straight. I can almost see the Brad Pitt montage and hear the music when writing this one. What a classic.”
