“This might as well be exhibit A on why the head-to-head being the first tiebreaker in group play is not a good idea. Neither Paraguay or Australia needed a win, but it would be nice. However, a point was also gonna be very beneficial as it would practically guarantee both teams a spot in the knockouts. This game played out like both teams knew it. When FIFA made the change to head-to-head being the first tiebreaker, I didn’t have a problem with it. On the surface, it feels like the most sensible way to settle ties in groups and could encourage teams to go for the win instead of the draw against each of their opponents. However, in practice, it gives us scenarios like this and the combination with the expanded field makes this problem even more prominent. I don’t doubt that either side wanted to win this game, they certainly showed that in the final few minutes, but the 90 minutes before that was full of slow cautious play. It’s a shame, because this could’ve been a great matchup. ”
