IHO • Miracle on Ice02/22/1980
I recently watched The Boys of '80 on Netflix and cannot recommend it enough as it transports you back in time and properly sets the stage. We often wish that sports and politics weren't so deeply intertwined. However, in the arena of international competition, that is rarely the case. Never more apparent than during the 1980 Winter Olympics, where a high-stakes showdown between the USA and the Soviet Union took place at the very peak of the Cold War.
I happen to have family from Lake Placid and have visited the Olympic Center and Village many many times in my life. Being born in 1990 I didn't really appreciate the gravity of this game when I was a kid and was told about it. Herb Brooks was the most ruthless competitive Coach you've ever seen, the fact that we had our best college kids vs Soviet Professional Hockey Players, the 2 goal 3rd period and the most legendary call in all of sports.
The question is rhetorical but we answer it anyways:
Do you believe in miracles? YES!
