“The Tim Howard Game. Howard very nearly single handedly won the USA this game. Despite all the incredible goalkeeping performances in this year’s tournament, none of them were able to break or even tie Howard’s record for most saves that he set in this game. It’s fascinating looking back on this game because it was basically a battle between 2 supposed golden generations at opposite sides of the spectrum. The USA’s was going through their last dance while Belgium’s was in their first major tournament as a group. Despite the disparity in experience, Belgium dumped an avalanche of shots onto the USA. Tim Howard stopped shot after shot, keeping the USA in the game against all odds. It looked like extra time was inevitable until the dying seconds when Chris Wondolowski was all alone only to shank the shot. Extra time came and De Bruyne finally broke the deadlock and, as he did 12 years later, Lukaku gave Belgium valuable insurance to hang on for the win. Valiant effort from Tim Howard. ”
