“By far the greatest sporting event I have ever watched. This game had so much hype going into it. Obviously the possibility of this being Messi’s final chance to win a World Cup was on everyone’s mind, but Mbappé was looking to join the likes of Pele in Football history as the first nation to repeat as World Cup champions since Brazil did it. It was the greatest player of his generation vs a legend in the making. The first 80 minutes were full of Argentinian brilliance. Messi was probably the best player on the field, but he didn’t have to carry the load himself anymore as Argentina led 2-0. Then, Mbappé happened. 2 goals in less than 2 minutes to tie it up as Argentina held on for dear life. We got extra time where Messi and Mbappé matched each other in goals and Emi Martinez made the most important save in World Cup history. Finally, we got a dramatic penalty shootout where Argentina prevailed. In the words of Peter Drury: “Messi has conquered his final peak”. Absolutely incredible.”
