“This is a legendary game because of something that had nothing to do with actual football. In the final game of Zinedine Zidane’s historic career, a triumphant 2nd World Cup so close to his grasp, Marco Materazzi got under his skin enough to make Zidane lash out with the most legendary headbutt in football history. In some ways, it’s a shame. Not only does this moment overshadow Italy’s World Cup victory, but it also overshadows the disgustingly gorgeous penalty Zidane scored on Buffon earlier in this game. It truly is serendipitous that Materazzi tied the game up and then was the one to get Zidane sent off in extra time. Maybe none of this happens if Buffon doesn’t save Zidane’s header in extra time. If he scores, we’d be talking about how Zidane capped off his incredible career perfectly. Instead, we’re talking about Zidane defending his family’s honour, a moniker I’m sure he prefers. Besides, he still won the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. He controlled the game to the end”
