“No matter what happens, no matter how dire the situation, no matter the opponent, Argentina keeps finding victories when nobody expects nor wants them to. The first half was a very mucky. Full of fouls and chippy play that paradoxically also zoomed by as it seemed like the first team to score would win it all. England got that first goal thanks to Anthony Gordon sneaking behind Argentina’s defence. Combine that with England’s backline that has proven repeatedly capable of hanging on to leads with Spence having the game of his life, it certainly felt like England could cruise. Instead, it immediately became clear that Argentina was going to score. A combination of letting Argentina have the ball, missed assignments and just poor defensive play, gave Argentina chance after chance. They could’ve easily scored minutes earlier, but a blast from Enzo Fernandez tied the game at 1 and Lionel Messi waved his magic wand, sent a perfect cross to Lautaro Martinez and he hit it home for the win. ”
