PPG Paints Arena in downtown Pittsburgh is the home of the Penguins, built as a sleek, glass-heavy replacement for the aging Civic Arena. Its design opens up long sightlines and natural light rarely found in NHL buildings, and the surrounding Lower Hill redevelopment has grown up around it in the years since. Game nights carry the weight of one of the league's most successful modern franchises, with a fan base that expects deep playoff runs. The arena has also become one of the region's top concert venues since opening.
The arena opened in August 2010, replacing the Civic Arena (later Mellon Arena), which had housed the Penguins since the franchise's founding in 1967. Paul McCartney headlined the building's inaugural concert before a single puck had dropped, selling out so fast that a second show was added. It opened directly into the Sidney Crosby-Evgeni Malkin era and has hosted Stanley Cup championship runs in 2016 and 2017, part of the Penguins' run of five Cups across franchise history. Now known as PPG Paints Arena after a 2016 naming-rights deal (previously CONSOL Energy Center), it remains one of the league's model modern arenas.
