Originally opened as Florida Field in 1930, it is universally known by its nickname, 'The Swamp,' a reference to the brutal combination of heat, humidity, and crowd noise that visiting teams face. Coach Steve Spurrier coined the 'Swamp' nickname in 1992, cementing an identity that has stuck through decades of Gators football, including Florida's national championship-era teams under Spurrier and later Urban Meyer.
