Climate Pledge Arena

Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle's Seattle Center is the home of both the NHL's Kraken and the WNBA's Storm, built inside the preserved, landmarked roof of the original 1962 World's Fair arena. The rest of the building was excavated and rebuilt from the ground down while the iconic roof stayed exactly where it was, making it a rare feat of adaptive-reuse architecture. It's billed as the first arena in the world to earn International Living Future Institute Zero Carbon certification, with rainwater-harvested ice and 100% renewable power. The result is a striking mix of mid-century civic landmark and cutting-edge sustainable sports venue.

Climate Pledge Arena opened on October 19, 2021, months ahead of the Kraken's inaugural NHL season, bringing top-tier professional hockey back to Seattle for the first time since the 1970s-era Totems. The site itself dates to the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, when the original Coliseum was built beneath the same roof that still crowns the building today. Its sustainability-first design, from harvested rainwater ice to solar panels, made it a model for how sports venues could pursue carbon neutrality, and it received Zero Carbon certification in 2023. It has quickly become a signature stop for concerts and events on top of hosting both the Kraken and the Storm.
