FIFA Did You Know & Fan Stories

    • We needed heat breaks

6 stadiums will have heat advisories as of now and possibly in the future. Add the humidity and we could see multiple strokes. This is why the hydration breaks do need to happen. This is one of the hottest world cups of all time. And two stadiums are domed, which improves the conditions but the rest are dangerous.

    • BRACE YOURSELVES.

Messi, Mbappé, and Haaland are averaging 2 goals PER MATCH at the 2026 World Cup. Lionel Messi 🇦🇷 • Hat-trick vs Algeria (3 goals) • Brace vs Austria (2 goals) = 5 goals total (and he broke the all-time World Cup goals record in the process) Kylian Mbappé 🇫🇷 • Brace vs Senegal (2 goals) • Brace vs Iraq (2 goals) = At least 4 goals (and he became France’s all time leading international scorer along the way) Erling Haaland 🇳🇴 • Brace vs Iraq (2 goals) • Brace vs Senegal (2 goals) = 4 goals in 2 games (his World Cup debut no less) These supersonic mega stars have combined for 13(!!) goals in just two total match days. Guess who play each other on Friday with a group title on the line? It's The Viking vs The Dictator. BRACE YOURSELVES.

    • “ITS COMING HOME”

England enters the 2026 World Cup as one of the favorites to win the tournament. But, English fans around the world have heard that before and hope to bring the trophy back home for the first time since 1966. In WCQ we saw England go 8-0-0 not losing or even conceding a single goal. They scored 22 goals and who else than Harry Kane scored 8 of the 22. The premier league champion Declan Rice had 4 assists also. England plays a 4-2-3-1 formation and has a high intensity type of play. They will focus on maintaining possession and frustrating their opponents. They are very good at keeping possession, one of the best out there. They have all the star power in the world as we know. Jude the dude, Harry Kanne, the list goes on. They often are vulnerable to getting counter attacked, they also don’t have a back up plan other than hope Harry Kane and Jude to score a banger. You know I have to mention the legend Harry Maguire. He was left out of the national team for good reason that I’m not getting into. I just wanted to say his name in her, it would not be a true English football preview without him. I’m a huge fan of Pickford, I hope he gets the start in goalie, he can be a very strong keeper and has history with this team. They have elite wingers in Rashford and Saka. Yes Rashfords elite fight me. Rice and Anderson will be in the midfield. Both of those guys will do what they do I’m not worried about them. The defense is not as strong as the offense but that’s a high bar to compare, I like the defense I think they’ll do fine. Straight bias right here, I’m a huge Eze fan and I hope he gets to show the world how incredible he is. Just wait for a goal in the 76th minute against Croatia. I’m a big England supporter, I think they can absolutely win this tournament. But as we know it’s not that easy. Sitting in group L I think they’ll top the group. I got them beating Croatia pretty bad. It’s the knockouts that scare me, I feel like some unlucky own goal is going to occur in the round of 16 in like the 86th minute that sends England home. In all seriousness it might actually be coming home. I’m not saying start the padre just yet but it’s looking good.

    • Let The Stars Shine

During day six of the 2026 FIFA World Cup we saw three matches played. France-Senegal, Norway-Iraq, and Argentina-Algeria. Those teams have some of the best players in the world on their teams, Mbappe, Haaland, and Messi. Three of the biggest stars in the game. And Lord they did not disappoint. All players scored two goals . With those two goals Messi is tied for second for the most goals scored in the World Cup ever. As I'm writing this Messi just scored another goal. He is the goat everyone, no question about it. He is now tied for the most goals ever in World Cup play. He just got he first ever hat trick in the world cup play.

    • All Draws

During day five of the 2026 World Cup we saw four games and four ties. That is the second time that has happened, the last time was 68 years ago in 1958. Today (June 15th, 2026) we saw Cabo Verde-Spain draw 0-0, Belgium-Egypt draw 1-1, Saudi Arabia-Uruguay draw 1-1, and Iran-New Zealand draw 2-2. Cabo Verde was the biggest surprise drawing one of the world cup favorites Spain 0-0 and holding them to no goals. As the World Cup continues I doubt we will get another day with 3+ games and 3+ draws. It could be another 68 years till we see this again so enjoy it while it's here.

    • The Unofficial World Football Championship

The Unofficial Football World Championship... As a casual fan of soccer/football myself (I shall call it soccer from here on out. If that offends you I'm sorry and I agree our sport of choice should in fact be called Hand Potatoe), I can think of no better way to dive down a rabbit hole of soccer sports history. What is the UWFC? It's simple in theory, a knock-out style "tournament" that never ends. If you beat the champion, you are the champion until you lose. Like most stories soccer related, the concept started in the United Kingdom when in April of 1967 Scotland defeated reigning 1966 World Cup Champs England by a score of 3-2 in the British Home Championship final (The BHC is also another rabbit hole to go down but we can another day), since this was Englands first loss since winning the previous World Cup soon after sections of the Scottish crowd and some members of the Scottish media jokingly labelled Scotland as the Unoffical Football World Champions and it was born... in a way... 35 years later (probably) in an English pub by a group of statisticians who went through years and years of data and crunched the numbers for who should rightfully be crowned UFWC champs only to almost undoubtedly lose the title within the next match or two. Here is some of the data: The first "official" Unofficial Football World Champion was crowned in 1873 when England overcame Scotland (all roads lead to bad teeth and funny accents in soccer if you ask me) 4-2. This was the second international match to occur but the first in 1872 ended in a draw so alas, no champion was crowned that year. From 1873 to 1931 the title was exclusively held by the nations of the United Kingdom with England dominating for the majority of that time. For perspective on that, Wales entered play in 1876 and did not win the title until 1907. Ireland? Even worse, no title from 1882 to 1927. Which you could certainly say was... troubling. But admittedly there was a bit of a conflict going on for a few years in the 1910s about some Mortal Kombat sounding dude in Austria named Archduke Franz or something that made competing just a tad bit difficult. War of the worlds and things like that, y'know. But even after a world war, in a soccer sense the first team to "recover" and snag the title from a team in the United Kingdom was in 1931 when Austria (Now with 100% less Archduke!) walloped Scotland 5-0 and would hold the title for nearly a year and a half until in late December of 1932 when, you guessed it. England captured the crown back and for the next 7 or so years the title still swapped back and forth between mostly England, Scotland, and Wales until in May of 1939 England dropped the title to Yugoslovia and... Oh boy if you are a history buff I'm sure you know they really regretted that. Yugoslavia quickly dropped the title to Italy and until 1947 the title stayed with Axis or Axis allied/neutral teams until England captured the crown once again in 1947. If you are curious the Nazi's had a fairly poor track record in that time which made me chuckle considering I assumed there would be massive propaganda and influence on games (See 1936 World Cup and Italy) but Germany throughout that time won the title 3 times and only successfully defended once... KaiserBums if you ask me but I suppose more important things were going on in the world. So up until 1947 you may have noticed a trend, long domination by mostly England and Scotland with spurts of other Isle teams with extreme cases of regional domination when conflict would break out. So many stories with Soccer I feel tie into real world events. Hell, wars have literally been started over the World Cup so seeing a completely made up title be interweaved with so many real world events is so interesting to me. I did not expect this to get this long and I only made it to 1947 and haven't really gone "through the numbers" completely yet. If this gets some likes I'll go deeper with a part 2. If you are curious though the current UWFC holders are Turkey (as of 6/13/26) and no team has ever had the title before the World Cup and maintained throughout to win the cup as well. Will Turkey be the first?

    • Cristiano’s drought

Despite playing in his 6th World Cup in 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s legendary forward, still has yet to record a single goal contribution in the knockout stage of the competition; a scoreless streak of 8 games that he will certainly be trying to snap in North America.

    • The only countries to win a World Cup

Only a select group of nations have ever lifted the FIFA World Cup, and each victory tells a story of its time. The first champions were Uruguay, who won in 1930, defeating Argentina 4–2 in Montevideo. They triumphed again in 1950, famously beating Brazil 2–1 in the “Maracanazo.” Italy followed as an early powerhouse, with Italy winning in 1934 (2–1 vs. Czechoslovakia) and 1938 (4–2 vs. Hungary), later adding titles in 1982 (3–1 vs. West Germany) and 2006 (beating France on penalties). Notably, Czechoslovakia no longer exists today, having split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Germany has a complex history tied to political change. As West Germany, they won in 1954 (3–2 vs. Hungary), 1974 (2–1 vs. the Netherlands), and 1990 (1–0 vs. Argentina). After reunification, Germany added a fourth title in 2014, defeating Argentina 1–0. Hungary, despite their legendary team in 1954, never claimed the trophy. Brazil remains the most successful nation, winning five titles: 1958 (5–2 vs. Sweden), 1962 (3–1 vs. Czechoslovakia), 1970 (4–1 vs. Italy), 1994 (on penalties vs. Italy), and 2002 (2–0 vs. Germany). Their flair and attacking brilliance have defined eras of football. England claimed their only title in 1966, beating West Germany 4–2 at Wembley in a historic final. Argentina has won three times: 1978 (3–1 vs. the Netherlands), 1986 (3–2 vs. West Germany), and 2022 (defeating France on penalties after a 3–3 thriller). The Netherlands, despite multiple finals, have yet to win a World Cup. France lifted the trophy in 1998 (3–0 vs. Brazil) and again in 2018 (4–2 vs. Croatia), showcasing dominance across generations. Spain earned their first and only title in 2010, narrowly beating the Netherlands 1–0 in extra time. Across nearly a century, only eight nations have reached the pinnacle of world football. From early European dominance to South American flair and modern global competition, each champion reflects both sporting excellence and historical context, including nations that no longer exist in the same form today.

    • 20 year losing streak

San Marino’s men national team went on a 20 year losing streak from April 28th 2004 (1-0 victory over Liechtenstein in a friendly) to September 5th 2024 (1-0 victory over Liechtenstein in the Nations league). Since the 2004 victory was an international friendly, that victory was also San Marino’s first ever competitive win. San Marino would beat Liechtenstein in the nations league again 3-1 on November 18th 2024, which was their third all time victory (all of which came against Liechtenstein). They also drew against Gibraltar before that which led to San Marino winning the three team group to get promotion to Nations League C.

    • World Cup winners missing the knockout rounds

From 2010-2018, the defending World Cup champion missed the knockout rounds all three times. In 2010, defending champions Italy went out in the group stage with two 1-1 draws against Paraguay and New Zealand and a 3-2 loss to Slovakia finishing bottom of the group with two points (France, who they beat in the 2006 final also finished bottom of their group too with one point). Then in 2014, Spain crashed out of the group stage with a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands and a 2-0 loss to Chile before getting a meaningless 3-0 win against Australia to finish with 3 points. In 2018, Germany lost 1-0 to Mexico before bouncing back against Sweden, then got upset by South Korea 2-0 and finished bottom of the group with 3 points.
